How many tourists visit South Australia each year?

Over 7.59 million visitors travelled to South Australia in 2024 (year ending March 2024).

Of these, 7.46 million were domestic visitors, a decrease of 0.3% from 7.48 million domestic visitors in 2023.
International visitors totalled 135,000, which was a 17.2% drop from 163,000 international visitors in 2019.

Tourists spent approximately $6.95 billion in South Australia in the year ending March 2024.

Domestic visitors contributed about $6.78 billion, which was a 3.9% increase from $6.53 billion in 2023.
International visitors spent $169 million in 2024, an increase of 25.2% from the $135 million spent in 2019.
Overall, total spending increased by 6.5% from $6.53 billion in 2023, driven by domestic visitor spending growth.

For the first quarter of 2021 (January-March), South Australia received over 1.7 million domestic overnight visitors.

Visitor numbers were roughly unchanged when compared with the first quarter of 2020 (over 1.7 million).

Overnight visitors spent over $1.24 billion during visits to South Australia for the first quarter of 2021 (January-March).

Spending was down 3.6% when compared with the over $1.29 billion spent during the first quarter of 2020.

This total was made up of 355,000 international visitors and over 6.5 million domestic visitors.
Visitors to South Australia decreased by 12.8% when compared to 2018/19.

International visitors spent an estimated $907 million during trips to South Australia in the year ending June 2020.

International spending decreased by 16.2% when compared with the $1.08 billion of 2018/19.

Domestic visitors spent an estimated $4 billion during trips to South Australia in the year ending June 2020.

Combined, visitors spent a total of $4.9 billion during trips to South Australia in the year ending June 2020.

Total spending was down 15.5% when compared with the $5.8 billion of the previous year.
