How many tourists visit Darwin each year?

Over 815,000 tourists visited Darwin in 2024 (year ending December).

This included roughly 689,000 domestic visitors and about 126,000 international visitors.

Total visitor numbers in 2024 remained approximately 10% lower than the 2019 peak of around 909,000.

Tourists spent approximately A$1.53 billion in Darwin during the year ending December 2024.

International visitors contributed around A$235 million, while domestic travelers spent roughly A$1.29 billion.

Total tourism spending in Darwin was about 40% higher than in 2019 (when visitor expenditure was about A$1.09 billion).

Over 569,000 visitors travelled to Darwin in the year ending June 2020.¹

This total was made up of 108,000 international visitors and 569,000 domestic visitors.

Between 2009 and 2019, international visitors decreased by 22% while domestic visitors grew by 33%.

Darwin was the 15th most visited destination for international visitors in 2019.
Darwin was the 29th most visited destination for domestic visitors in 2019.

Visitors spent over $1.1 billion on trips to Darwin between July 2018 and June 2019.
International visitors contributed $127 million to this total and domestic visitors $980 million.
Darwin ranked 17th overall for total tourist spend among Australian destinations in 2018/19.
