How many tourists visit Tasmania each year?

Approximately 3.25 million tourists visited Tasmania in 2024 (year ending March 2024).

This included 3.15 million domestic visitors, a 5% increase from the 2.99 million domestic visitors in 2023.
International visitors totalled 108,000, a 35.3% decrease from the 167,000 international visitors in 2019.
The overall visitor count in 2024 increased by 8.2% compared to 2023 but remained lower due to the decline in international visitors.

Tourists spent approximately $3.92 billion in Tasmania in the year ending March 2024.

Domestic visitors contributed $3.75 billion, which was a slight decrease of 1% from $3.79 billion in 2023.
International visitors spent $166 million in 2024, down slightly from $168 million in 2019.

Over 3 million tourists and other visitors travelled to Tasmania in the year ending June 2023.

This total included over 166,000 international visitors and over 2.8 million domestic overnight visitors.
Visitors were up 7% when compared with the over 2.8 million visitors in 2022.
Visitor numbers are down 13.6% when compared to the over 3.4 million visitors in pre-pandemic 2019.

Visitors spent over $3.8 billion during trips to Tasmania in 2023 (year ending June 2023).

This total included over $297 million from international visitors and over $3.8 billion from domestic overnight visitors.
Spending is up 29.5% when compared with the over $2.9 billion spent during 2022.
Spending has increased by 12.8% when compared with the over $3.3 billion spent in 2019.

For the first quarter of 2021 (January-March), Tasmania received over 849,000 domestic overnight visitors.

Visitors were up 0.3% when compared with the over 755,000 visitors of the first quarter of 2020.

Overnight visitors spent over $822 million during visits to Tasmania for the first quarter of 2021 (January-March).

Spending was down 13.1% when compared with the over $946 million spent during the first quarter of 2020.

Over 2.6 million travellers visited Tasmania in the year ending June 2020.¹

This total was made up of 200,000 international visitors and over 2.4 million domestic visitors.
Visitors to Tasmania decreased by 25% when compared with the 3.5 million visitors of 2018/19.

International visitors spent an estimated $395 million during trips to Tasmania in the year ending June 2020.

International spending was down 25.1% when compared to the $528 million of 2018/19.

Domestic visitors spent an estimated $2.2 billion during trips to Tasmania in the year ending June 2020.

Domestic spending was down 19.6% when compared with the $2.8 billion of 2018/19.

Combined, visitors spent a total of $2.6 billion during trips to Tasmania in the year ending June 2020.

Total spending was down 21.2% when compared with the $3.3 billion of the previous year.

This total includes 300,000 international visitors and 3,200,000 domestic overnight visitors.
Tourists spent over $3.2 billion in Tasmania in 2019.

Over 1.9 million tourists and other visitors arrived in Hobart and Southern Tasmania between July 2018 and June 2019.
This total includes 1,700,000 domestic visitors and 263,000 international visitors.

The number of camping trips throughout Tasmania has grown by 11.2% over the 10-year period from 2008 to 2018.²
In 2018 over 175k overnight camping trips were made in Tasmania.
Camping trips – including caravan, campervan, commercial and non-commercial camping – made up 12.6% of visitor nights for domestic travellers to Tasmania in 2019 (year ending September).
