Driving a Motorhome around Portugal

  • All Autoestradas (motorways) have tolls. Most motorhomes are classified as toll Class 2 when the front-axle height is above 1.10 m. Pay with a Via Verde transponder, at pay-stations or online for electronic-only sections.
  • Lisbon and Porto have low-emission ZER zones (Zero Emission Restricted zones). Entry is only allowed for Euro 4 or higher standard engines during daytime hours. Check signs before you enter these areas.
  • Parking overnight is legal for up to 48 hours in a self-contained motorhome. This does not apply in Natura 2000 nature reserves, coastal protection areas and other protected areas. Fines for breaking this rule start at €120.
  • Speed limits for vans under 3.5 tonnes are 120 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on expressways, 90 km/h on other roads and 50 km/h in towns.
  • ASA stops (motorhome service areas) are located across mainland Portugal. Many charge €5–12 per night and include water and waste dump points.
  • Intermarché supermarkets and motorway service areas often have free waste disposal and fresh-water refill points.
  • Park-and-Ride sites on Lisbon and Porto metro lines allow you to leave your motorhome outside the city and avoid low-emission zone restrictions.

Places to Stay in a Motorhome

Option Type Typical features
ASA motorhome area Basic stop Level parking, water, waste dump, €5–12 per night
Camping Municipal Public campsite Showers, electricity, often within walking distance to town
Private 3 ★ or 4 ★ campsite Full-service park Larger spaces, swimming pool or restaurant, optional electrical hookups

Área de Serviço para Autocaravanas is the Portuguese term for a basic motorhome service area. This is similar to a French Aire or a German Stellplatz.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is wild camping in a motorhome permitted in Portugal?

Portugal strictly prohibits wild/free camping, even on privately owned land. Fines will often be given on the spot if you are caught breaking these rules.

Portugal has over 100 campsites, which start at around €6 per night.

Do I need a special licence to drive a camper in Portugal?

All drivers must have a current and full driver’s licence to hire a vehicle. Drivers are allowed to drive up to 6 months in Portugal without an International Driving Permit (IDP).

In addition, some campervan rental suppliers require the driver to have held their licence for a certain period of time (1–3 years).

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
