Área de Serviço para Autocaravanas is the Portuguese term for a basic motorhome service area. This is similar to a French Aire or a German Stellplatz.
Portugal strictly prohibits wild/free camping, even on privately owned land. Fines will often be given on the spot if you are caught breaking these rules.
Portugal has over 100 campsites, which start at around €6 per night.
All drivers must have a current and full driver’s licence to hire a vehicle. Drivers are allowed to drive up to 6 months in Portugal without an International Driving Permit (IDP).
In addition, some campervan rental suppliers require the driver to have held their licence for a certain period of time (1–3 years).
