Driving a Campervan around Austria

  • A digital vignette is required on motorways for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. A ten-day pass costs about €11.50 in 2025.
  • Campervans over 3.5 tonnes need a GO-box that charges based on distance travelled. You can buy this at border stations and large fuel stops.
  • Extra tolls apply on alpine roads such as the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and the Brenner Pass. You can pay at the toll booth or online.
  • Winter tyres are required from 1 November to 15 April. Snow chains must be carried when crossing high mountain passes.
  • Staying overnight outside official camping sites is prohibited in most provinces. You must ask landowners for written permission if you plan to stay on private land.
  • Service areas on the A1 and A10 motorways have water taps and wide parking spaces suitable for one-night stops.
  • LPG fuel is labelled as "Autogas" and is common along main routes but rare in remote mountain valleys. Refill your tank before heading deep into the Alps.
  • The speed limit drops from 130 km/h to 100 km/h during environmental IG-L alerts. Watch the electronic signs on motorways.
