Driving a Campervan around Austria

  • A motorway vignette (sticker or digital) is required on most motorways and expressways for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes (technically permissible maximum laden mass). A 10-day vignette costs €12.80 (2026). Note: the 18-day consumer-protection waiting period applies to online purchases of 2-month and annual digital vignettes by private consumers, but it does not apply to 1-day or 10-day vignettes.
  • Campervans over 3.5 tonnes need a GO-box that charges based on distance travelled. You can buy this at border stations and large fuel stops.
  • Extra tolls apply on alpine roads such as the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and the Brenner Pass. You can pay at the toll booth or online.
  • Winter tyres are required from 1 November to 15 April. Snow chains must be carried when crossing high mountain passes.
  • Staying overnight outside official campsites is prohibited in most provinces. You must ask landowners for written permission if you plan to stay on private land.
  • Service areas on the A1 and A10 motorways have water taps and wide parking bays suitable for one-night stops.
  • LPG fuel is labelled as "Autogas" and is common along main routes but rare in remote mountain valleys. Refill your tank before heading deep into the Alps.
  • The speed limit drops from 130 km/h to 100 km/h during environmental IG-L alerts. Watch the electronic signs on motorways.

Places to Stay in a Motorhome

Stop type Facilities Typical cost per night

Stellplatz is the German term for a designated motorhome parking area, typically aimed at short stays and usually offering simpler facilities than a full-service campsite (services vary by location).
