Driving a Campervan around Barcelona

  • The ring roads B-10 (Ronda Litoral) and B-20 (Ronda de Dalt) circle the city. Tunnels on B-10 have a height limit of 4.5 metres.
  • The ZBE Rondes low-emission zone operates Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 20:00. Foreign vehicles must register online before entering and pay a €5 processing fee if the van meets the required Euro emission standard.
  • Rush-hour traffic is heaviest from 08:00 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 20:00. Park-and-ride sites such as Cornellà Centre or Montcada i Reixac help you avoid inner-city traffic.
  • Toll tunnels on C-16 (Vallvidrera) and C-32 (Sitges) charge fees based on axle count and vehicle height. Expect to pay approximately €4 to €8 for a standard camper.
  • Street overnight parking is allowed only if no awnings, steps or levelling blocks are visible outside the vehicle. Enforcement is strict around La Rambla and the seafront areas.
  • Service stations on the AP-7 motorway north and south of Barcelona offer fresh water and waste dump points.

Is wild camping in a motorhome permitted in Spain?

Much of the land in Spain is privately owned. Permission must be granted if you wish to spend the night there.

Spain has designated areas for campervans where you can spend a night at no cost.

In addition, there are plenty of campsites, starting at around €9 per night.

Do I need a special licence to drive a camper in Spain?

All drivers must have a current and full driver’s licence to hire a vehicle. For foreign licences, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is also required.

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
