Driving a Campervan around Greece

  • Motorways use toll booths or an electronic pass tag. As a guide for the main Athens to Thessaloniki A1 route, one-way tolls total about €29 for a Category 2 vehicle (≤2.20 m) and about €73 for a Category 3 vehicle (>2.20 m, 2–3 axles), depending on your vehicle’s height/axles and where you enter/exit.

  • The Rio–Antirrio Bridge costs roughly €15.90 for car-height vehicles (up to 2 m) and €24.70 for taller 2-axle campervans (over 2 m), which includes many motorhomes.

  • Wild camping is heavily restricted in Greece (including beaches/seashores, forests, archaeological sites and other common-use public areas) and fines can reach €300 per person/camp/vehicle, with possible further penalties.

  • Overnight stops may be possible at motorway service areas, but rules are site-specific—follow posted signs and avoid “camping” behaviour even if you keep your awning packed away.

  • The Daktylios ring in central Athens is a weekday traffic restriction that generally runs seasonally and is mainly based on odd/even number plates during set hours; exemptions and permits change, so check the current rules before entering.

  • LPG fuel availability varies by region—check a current station map and plan refuelling ahead. If your camper uses LPG/CNG, note that ferry rules may require tanks to be no more than 50% full when boarding and you may need to declare the fuel type.

  • Athens’ controlled parking uses white bays for paid visitor parking (maximum stay is three hours) and blue bays for residents (permit only); visitor parking can be paid via a scratch card or the MyAthensPass app.

  • Ferries from Piraeus, Patras and Igoumenitsa accept campervans. Book summer ferry trips well in advance because deck space sells out quickly, and arrive in good time (some operators advise around 3 hours before departure on high-demand routes), especially if your vehicle uses alternative fuels (e.g., LPG/CNG).
