Driving a Campervan around Anchorage

  • No toll roads operate in or near the city, so you only pay for fuel.
  • Campervans up to 13 ft 6 in (4.1 m) height can pass under all bridges on the Glenn and Seward Highways, but check height limits on older downtown overpasses.
  • Winter tyres or chains are required from October to April. Studded tyres are legal statewide.
  • Parking overnight on public streets is not allowed. Use an RV park or a state campground outside the city limits.
  • Most petrol stations operate 24 hours along the Glenn Highway, which is helpful for early ferry departures from Whittier.
  • Moose often cross roads at dusk on Minnesota Drive and the Seward Highway. Drive slowly and keep headlights on low beam.
  • Free waste dump stations are available at the municipal station on the Old Seward Highway and at many highway rest areas.
  • Downtown parking has fees on weekdays from 09:00-18:00. Pay at the machine or with the EasyPark mobile app.

Frequently Asked Questions

What licence do you need to drive a campervan in the USA?

All drivers must have a current and full driver’s licence to hire a vehicle. Foreign licences are generally acceptable if they are in English or accompanied by an accredited English translation. Otherwise, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required.

In addition to your driver’s licence, you will often be required to show your passport at the time of pickup.

Some companies, e.g. Road Bear, Best Time and Britz, require an IDP regardless of the language of your licence.

Can I travel from the US to Canada in my rental campervan?

This depends on the company. Several rental suppliers will allow you to travel to Canada in your rental vehicle, including Apollo, El Monte, Jucy, Campervan North America, Travellers Autobarn, Escape Rentals and Cruise America.

Please contact support for information on other suppliers. You must comply with visa and customs requirements at all times.

Can I rent a one-way campervan in the US?

Yes, a large number of companies allow for one-way rentals. One-way rentals are not available on all routes, and additional fees apply, depending on the pickup and drop-off location.

Our comparison tool will automatically factor rental costs between two locations and show you which vehicles are available on your preferred route.

Are there any restrictions on where I can take my RV in the US?

Most rental companies only allow their vehicles to be driven on sealed/bitumen roads.

In addition, note the following restrictions regarding specific areas:

  • Mexico - With the exception of El Monte, travel to Mexico is prohibited in rental vehicles.
  • Death Valley - Restrictions can vary between suppliers but is generally allowed. However, travel may be restricted during certain times of the year. Check with your rental supplier for full details.
  • New York City/Downtown Manhattan - RVs are generally not allowed due to vehicle height restrictions around the city.
  • Canada - RVs are generally allowed; however, travel to certain locations may be restricted during colder seasons.

If you take your vehicle where it is not permitted, you will be liable for all damages incurred and an additional fine may be imposed.

Check your rental agreement for any further restrictions regarding your RV rental.

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
