Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any restrictions when travelling through central Australia in a motorhome?

Generally hire campers may only be driven on sealed roads. Different restrictions may apply to 4WD vehicles, and often written permission must be obtained before taking your 4WD camper off-road. Many roads around Alice Springs and Central Australia are sealed, including roads to some of the major tourist attractions, and are suitable for all vehicle types.

Note the following information regarding specific areas:

  • Uluru (Ayers Rock) – Accessible via sealed road; suitable for all campers
  • Mereenie Loop – 4WD recommended; a Mereenie Loop Pass permit is required; written permission is usually required from the hire company
  • West MacDonnell National Park – Most roads sealed; suitable for most campers
  • Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) – Roads are sealed; suitable for all vehicles
  • Alice Springs Desert Park – Road to entrance is sealed; suitable for all vehicles

Are there any restrictions on where I can take my 4WD rental vehicle?

Generally, 4WD vehicles can be driven on unsealed roads, but there are restricted areas and some tracks require prior permission.

In addition to unsealed roads, companies may restrict certain roads or trails with a reputation for being rough or rugged (and beaches are typically prohibited). If you take your vehicle into a restricted area, you’ll be liable for all damages and in some cases may also have to pay additional fees/penalties under your hire agreement.

If unsure about a certain area, it’s best to contact the hire company in advance.

Does my 4WD campervan rental include unlimited mileage?

For 4WD vehicles, a daily mileage allowance usually applies (around 300 km), thereafter additional fees will apply.

The comparison tool will show you which vehicles have unlimited kilometres and which have restricted mileage. Consult the rental agreement of the supplier for further details.

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.

Alice Springs 4WD Campervan Tips

Do you need a 4WD camper to explore Alice Springs?

A 4WD is not required to explore the wonders of the great outback. In fact, 95% of the Northern Territory's attractions are accessible by 2WD vehicles, such as motorhomes and campervans, because of the extensive network of sealed highways. Motorhomes and campervans must strictly adhere to driving only on sealed roads.

If you are new to campervanning, visiting Alice for the first time or travelling with family, we recommend using a motorhome or campervan. Getting around this way provides more flexibility.

Are there any restrictions on where you can take a 4WD camper rental in Alice Springs?

Generally, 4WD campers may only be driven on recognised public roads and formed tracks (sealed or unsealed). Off-road driving is not permitted. In some cases, you can request written approval to access specific areas or routes and this must be arranged in advance.

In addition to unsealed roads, hire companies often restrict certain roads or tracks that are known to be especially rough, remote, or risky. If you drive into a restricted area, you may be liable for any damage and recovery costs, and your cover/insurance may be reduced or void. You may also be charged additional fees by the hire company, and if local regulations are breached, authorities may issue fines.

If you’re unsure whether a particular road or area is permitted, it’s best to contact the hire company before you travel.

Is campervan hire with unlimited mileage available in Alice Springs?

For 4WD vehicles, a daily mileage allowance usually applies (around 300 km). After that, additional fees will apply.

The comparison tool will show which vehicles have unlimited kilometres and limited free mileage. Consult the rental agreement of the supplier for further details.

How does a rooftop tent work?

Some 4WD campers are equipped with a roof tent and self-inflating sleeping mats. This means that the vehicle doesn't have sleeping space inside. Instead, a tent is mounted on top of the campervan, which then can be set up for overnight camping.

For example the Britz Safari 4WD Camper (based on a Toyota Landcruiser) is mounted with a double-bed rooftop tent. The tent also has an annex with space for up to three more persons.

Other 4x4 campervan rental models have a pop up roof (pop-top campers) allowing for beds to located within the motorhome itself.
