Yes, while most rental companies restrict travel on unsealed roads, an exception is often made for well-maintained, recognized roads on Kangaroo Island for both 2WD and 4WD campers.
In order to get to Kangaroo Island, you will need to book a ferry; please note that this is the responsibility of the renter. Check with your rental supplier to see if any further restrictions apply.
Generally, 4WD vehicles can only be driven on recognised sealed tracks.
Exceptions can be made for some areas, however, permission is usually required in advance especially for any off-road areas.
In addition to unsealed roads, companies may restrict certain roads or trails with a reputation for being rough or rugged. If you take your vehicle into an area that is restricted you will be liable for all damages and in some cases will also have to pay a fine.
If unsure about a certain area, it’s best to contact the rental company in advance.
For 4WD vehicles, a daily mileage allowance usually applies (around 300 km), thereafter additional fees will apply.
