Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take my rental campervan beyond Cape Tribulation?

No, the road from Cape Tribulation to Cooktown in Far North Queensland is unsealed and can be challenging. Generally, companies restrict access to this area. Check with your rental supplier for any questions regarding restricted areas.

Can I take my rental campervan to Cape York?

Generally, regular 2WD campervans are not permitted to travel to Cape York. Many companies make exceptions for 4WD campers, but written permission must be obtained first. Check with your rental supplier for any questions regarding restricted areas.

Does my 4WD campervan rental include unlimited mileage?

For 4WD vehicles, a daily mileage allowance usually applies (around 300 km), thereafter additional fees will apply.

The comparison tool will show you which vehicles have unlimited kilometres and which have restricted mileage. Consult the rental agreement of the supplier for further details.

How does a rooftop tent work?

Some 4WD campers are equipped with a roof tent and self-inflating sleeping mats. This means that the vehicle doesn't have sleeping space inside. Instead, a tent is mounted on top of the campervan, which then can be set up for overnight camping.

For example, some 4WD campers have a double-bed rooftop tent and can include a ground annex for extra sheltered space.

Other 4x4 campervan hire models have a pop-up roof (pop-top campers) allowing for beds to be located within the motorhome itself.

Are there any restrictions on where I can take my 4WD rental vehicle?

Generally, 4WD vehicles can be driven on unsealed roads, but there are restricted areas and some tracks require prior permission.

In addition to unsealed roads, companies may restrict certain roads or trails with a reputation for being rough or rugged (and beaches are typically prohibited). If you take your vehicle into a restricted area, you’ll be liable for all damages and in some cases may also have to pay additional fees/penalties under your hire agreement.

If unsure about a certain area, it’s best to contact the hire company in advance.

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
