Popular pickup locations include Tokyo, Osaka and Sapporo, with some operators offering one-way rentals between major cities.

Japan's extensive network of Michi-no-Eki roadside stations and auto campgrounds makes it well-suited for motorhome travel, though advance planning is essential due to vehicle size restrictions in urban areas.

Driving a Campervan around Japan

  • International visitors need an International Driving Permit to drive in Japan. Apply for this in your home country before travel.
  • Expressways are tolled. Using the rental ETC card speeds passage and bills based on distance travelled. The Tokyo to Kyoto drive costs about ¥13,000 in tolls.
  • Overnight parking is widely accepted at Michi-no-Eki roadside stations. Toilets stay open 24 hours and parking is free.
  • Service Areas on expressways have fuel, coin showers and occasional cassette-toilet dump points.
  • Many auto campgrounds close between November and April in northern areas due to snow.
  • Motorhomes over 2.3 m height often cannot enter urban multi-storey car parks. Look for surface parking lots marked "大型" (large vehicle).
  • LPG gas is rare. Most rental campers use petrol so plan fuel stops before long rural drives.
  • Speed limits for large vehicles on expressways are generally 80 km/h.
  • Large cities have anti-idling rules and may fine drivers who leave engines running whilst parked.
