Driving a Campervan around Sicily

  • Ferries reach Sicily from mainland Italy ports (Genoa, Naples, Livorno) and from Malta. Main arrival ports are Palermo, Catania, Messina and Pozzallo.
  • Key motorways: A19 from Palermo to Catania has no tolls. A18 from Messina to Catania and A20 from Palermo to Messina have distance-based tolls that you pay by ticket or card.
  • Some cities including Catania and Palermo have restricted traffic zones called ZTL. These zones use automatic cameras. You need a permit to enter or you will receive a fine.
  • Campervans up to 3.5 tonnes pay toll class B which costs about the same as a car.
  • Wild camping (free camping outside of designated areas) is not allowed in Sicily. You must use official campsites or Aree di Sosta which cost about 5 to 20 euros and provide water and waste disposal.

  • Coastal roads are narrow and traffic moves slowly in summer. Fill your fuel tank before driving to remote areas and allow extra time for your journey.
