Campervan Hire - FAQ

Note: We compare multiple individual companies – each has its own terms and policies. Use the below answers as a general guide, however always check the terms of your rental, as details of may vary from company to company.

What is the minimum rental period?

The minimum length for a rental is typically 5, 7, or 10 days (depending on the company), though it may be longer during summer and other peak times.

Tip: if there aren’t enough vehicles available in your required time period, try extending the rental period by 1 or 2 days, or shifting the pickup/dropoff dates by a couple days – if you can.

Automatic Transmission. Do campervans have automatic or manual transmission?

Both manual and automatic transmissions are available, though some companies only have one or the other and various camper models may be only one or the other. You can filter by transmission types in our comparison tool.

Can we include additional drivers?

Additional drivers are generally allowed with an additional charge, assuming they are present at the time of hire and have the proper license to drive the motorhome.

Can I collect my campervan on a public holiday? Are there additional fees?

Rental companies may be closed for certain public holidays. For those depots that are open, a public holiday surcharge may apply. You’ll want to check carefully if you’re travelling at these times.

To help you out, our search tool will indicate whether a depot is closed on a given day – simply enter your start and end travel dates and we will highlight any closed depots.

Attractions around Sydney

Taronga Zoo

Just across the harbour, in the suburb of Mosman, Sydney’s Taronga Zoo was initially established by the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales in 1884 and has been in this picturesque waterside location since 1916.

The zoo is divided into eight zoogeographic regions and showcases over 300 species, many of which are native to Australia. Popular activities include keeper-led tours, bird and seal shows, and a recently added ‘wild ropes’ course.

Campervan access: The most popular way to arrive is by a fifteen-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay. There are many car parks near Circular Quay; alternatively, the zoo can also be reached by car across the Harbour Bridge.

Sydney Tower

Envisioned in 1968 and opened in 1981, the 309-metre-tall Sydney Tower is the city’s tallest structure and second only to Auckland’s Sky Tower in the Southern Hemisphere. While the shopping centre at the base is operated by the Westfield Group, Merlin Entertainment takes charge of the fully enclosed Observation Deck at 250 metres, billed as the Sydney Tower Eye.

In 2005, the open-air glass-floored Skywalk opened at 268 metres; this level, which is twice the height of the Harbour Bridge, can only be accessed with a guided tour.

Campervan access: The Sydney Tower partners with Wilson for discounted parking in several nearby car parks. As with most large cities in Australia, parking large vehicles can be a challenge in certain locations.

Powerhouse Museum

Often labeled as a science institution, the Powerhouse Museum is the flagship unit of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) and contains over 400,000 items within a dozen permanent exhibits, relating to a wide range of related topics: transportation (including steam engines), communications, decorative arts, costume, furniture, computers and technology, space, media.

125 years old, the Powerhouse has occupied a converted 1902 electric train power station near Darling Harbour since 1988.

Campervan access: Darling Harbour has numerous car parks, as well as public transit services. As with most large cities in Australia, parking large vehicles can be a challenge in certain locations.

Sydney Harbour Cruise

A view of the famous Opera House, iconic Harbour Bridge, and majestic Sydney skyline is often the highlight of a stay in Sydney, and seeing the unique perspective from the water truly shows off the city’s charm.

Several long-time cruise operators offer sailings of varying lengths: short narrated sightseeing trips, brunch and dinner cruises, and whale watching excursion s.

Campervan access: Cruises typically depart from either Circular Quay or Darling Harbour, both of which have multiple car parks in the vicinity.
